For more information and please contact:   Shin Park: 604-788-8193

Saturday February 13, 2010 South Arm United Church is sponsoring a concert and silent auction to raise funds for the “Doctors Without Borders” Haitian relief effort. There are performers coming from Coquitlam and Surrey as well as from Richmond. The music variety ranges from classical flute to folk to rock, a little something for everyone! The concert begins at 7:00 pm and is by donation which will be taken at the door.

The doors open at 6:30pm and people can choose their seats and browse the “Silent Auction”. During the intermission there will be tea, coffee, juice and cookies and last chance for bidding.

“Doctors Without Borders” is known internationally as “Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF)” and has been in operation for over 35 years. They are called to action in emergencies but often remain active in an area for several years, supporting and supplementing the local doctors in the form of a rehabilitation project. Any funds raised will not only support immediate efforts but will help MSF support the people of Haiti in the years to come as the country re-builds.

The concert is the brainchild of Shin Park a young woman who has travelled much of the world. Shin hopes in the future to work with “Doctors Without Borders”. She is quick to point out that the work of this International group is “AWESOME” and very deserving of whatever support we as a community can give.Gary Gaudin, Minister at South Arm United Church has been a long time supporter of “Doctors Without Borders” and is delighted to help raise awareness about their work. In Gary’s own words “This amazing group, offering medical expertise in some of the most problematic areas of the world, was already active in Haiti when the earthquake struck, and in some areas of Haiti have been the only medical practitioners available to the population. They are worth recipients of any funds which can be raised.”

While the excitement of the Olympics will have begun before the concert it is important to note that even if you can’t attend you can support the effort by helping to sponsor it, publicize it, or make a donation.Donations can be dropped off at the church office between 9 am – 2 pm Tuesday to Friday. Students from the Hugh Boyd Secondary School Incentive Program are holding a coin drive to raise funds that will be donated to the concert efforts. Students are excited to help raise money for “Doctors Without Borders”; they know they can help make a difference.

South Arm United Church is located at 11051 No. 3 Rd. Richmond.
